CONTINGENCY PLANS AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES (CUPA REQUIRED CONTINUING TRAINING)

con-tin-gen-cy  a.  A possibility that must be prepared against; future emergency.

Generators of Hazardous Waste are required by State and Federal law to prepare a written hazardous waste Contingency Plan to minimize hazards to human life and/or the environment from fires, explosions or other accidents involving hazardous waste.  This plan must contain all the required elements of the Generator’s Standards found in 22 CCR 66265.50.  Which includes:  (1) Immediate notification/alarm in the event of an emergency.  (2) Identification of local emergency medical assistance.  (3) Emergency Response Procedures and equipment for a release or threatened release of hazardous materials.  These procedures include prevention and mitigating the danger of a hazardous material release and evacuation procedures.  These written emergency procedures must identify and assessment of all anticipated major incidents, and the emergency response procedures which address each incident.  (4) Employee Training Program, which includes methods of safe handling of hazardous materials, how to get help, evacuation procedures and how to use spill clean up equipment.

If you generate hazardous waste, you need to attend this training seminar in order to maintain your trained status.  This training seminar will assist members in developing and maintaining an effective contingency plan and emergency response procedures.  Don’t wait until a CUPA Hazardous Material Investigator asks for a copy of your procedures and there is nothing to give him.
