Hazard Communication Standard Compliance Update
On March 26, 2012, OSHA modified the Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nations Global Harmonization System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals to increase the quality and consistency of information regarding chemical hazards and the associated protective measures in the workplace.
There are three major changes in the Standard:
Workplace Labeling and Other Forms of Warning. Each container of hazardous chemicals in the workplace shall be labeled, tagged, or marked with the following information:
1. Product identifier;
2. Signal word;
3. Hazard statement;
4. Pictogram(s);
5. Precautionary statement(s);
6. Manufacturer Information;
MSDS ARE NOW SAFETY DATA SHEETS. Each SAFETY DATA SHEET shall be in English and shall contain at least the following section numbers and headings, and associated information under each heading in the order listed.
Section 1, Identification; Section 2, Hazard(s) identification; Section 3, Composition/information on ingredients; Section 4, First-aid measures; Section 5, Fire-fighting measures; Section 6, Accidental release measures; Section 7, Handling and storage; Section 8, Exposure controls/personal protection; Section 9, Physical and chemical properties; Section 10, Stability and reactivity; Section 11, Toxicological information; Section 12, Ecological information; Section 13, Disposal considerations; Section 14, Transportation information; Section 15, Regulatory information; Section 16, Other information, including date of preparation or last revision;
Employee Training. Training needs to cover the new Hazard Communication Standard, the new Labeling information and the Safety Data Sheets new mandatory format. Training was required to be done by December 1, 2013.
